Can I substitute applesauce for oil in a recipe?

Question: My mom says you can substitute applesauce for oil in some recipes? What do you think?

Baking S.O.S. says: It is possible to substitute applesauce for some of the fat (oil, butter, or shortening) in recipes. However, fats serve an important role in baked goods, so you cannot omit them all together. Fats give baked goods moisture, tenderness, and flavor. If you completely omit the fats and substitute applesauce, your baked goods will be rubbery and unappetizing.

If you reduce the amount of oil (or other fat) in a recipe, you need to replace it with other tenderizing ingredients such as sugar, buttermilk, or whole eggs.

I found the following recipes using applesauce in baked goods on www.allrecipes.com:

Applesauce Oatmeal Cookies

Applesauce Brownies

Chocolate Tea Bread
